Company Profile

Company Overview

Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Institution in 1902 as an organization for scientific discovery. His intention was for the Institution to be home to exceptional individuals – men and women with imagination and extraordinary dedication capable of working at the cutting edge of their fields. The primary mission of the Institution remains exploration, discovery, and scientific understanding.

Today, Carnegie scientists work in six scientific departments: the Geophysical Laboratory and the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism in Washington, D.C., the Department of Embryology on the Johns Hopkins University campus in Baltimore, The Observatories in Pasadena, California, and the Departments of Global Ecology and Plant Biology on the Stanford University campus in California. The approximate 500 people of Carnegie carry out a remarkable range of projects from astronomy and cosmology to earth science, plant and animal biology, and ecology. With superb facilities such as giant telescopes in Chile, diamond anvils for reproducing conditions of the deep earth, an airborne observatory for mapping the Amazon forests, and many instruments for seismic measurements and microscopy, Carnegie people explore our history of the universe, the history of the earth, and the history of life to understand our present and inform our future.
